Course Information

Drawing Nightclass

This is a comprehensive course where we will be drawing different things each week which will stretch your mind regarding your own approach to drawing. Every week you will receive a lesson plan and photocopies relating to the particular session. During each lesson we all circulate as a class around the room to have a look at everybody's different drawing style. I prefer not to lend imagery out as it becomes time consuming keeping track of where it all is. There is always quiet music playing and a friendly atmosphere.

Please bring HB,2B,6B pencils - optional are water colour pencils and solid graphite pencils if you want to experiment. Rubber, sharpener, size A3 or larger cartridge paper.

Lesson 1 Drawing Using the Grid System and Tonal Rendering

By using this simple but exacting system, you will discover a new way of seeing and drawing an object or image. The grids cost $1.00 each and you may take referential photocopies home to continue working on. I continually circulate around the class in each session offering suggestions and encouragement. My style of teaching is to draw directly in to your work to explain things to you.

We will practice rendering with tone using both 2D and 3D references. You will be given photocopied imagery to take home.

Lesson 2 Drawing faces
We draw from life in this session, drawing profiles of class members. This is a very helpful and useful introduction into drawing from life which we continue with for the next two weeks. I will demonstrate on the whiteboard how to approach your drawing, looking at formal rules regarding portraiture. You also receive photocopied references to the formal rules as well as sketched portraits by other people to help you get started.
Lesson 3 Female life model
This is a challenging, but very rewarding class where we draw a live model. I continually circulate between students and the model showing you how to 'see' proportion by looking at the positive and negative shapes and other technical approaches. You are given photocopied references covering all of the aspects which I talk about.
You have the option of drawing in colour from now on. A large range of coloured chalks and pastels are provided for you to experiment with.
Lesson 4 Male life model
Same as above.
Lesson 5 Drawing from Still Life using an Artist Model
I ask everybody to bring an object from home for this lesson as it makes for a very interesting arrangement to draw from. The most intriguing object which has been brought along so far was a huge piece of whale vertibrae, but there have been many other interesting hand crafted and otherwise loved objects as well.
Tonight there is the option of drawing 'in the style' of another artist, Jim Dine. I have many referential as well as take home photocopies for you. Jim Dine's drawing style uses both accurate, refined representational drawing as well as loose, dramatic contrast to create intriguingly beautiful drawings from every day objects.
Lesson 6 Drawing Landscapes
Here we get expressive!! We draw from large images projected on to the wall using colored chalk on coloured paper to create dynamic drawings. There will also be a large range of 2D imagery to draw from if you prefer. I have seen many beautiful art works come out of this lesson over the years! All materials provided.
Lesson 7 Collage Portraits
For this lesson we use an artist model to create very beautiful and dynamic work. We create a portrait using layering of torn paper, charcoal drawing, water colours and flat colours...sound interesting? It is! All materials provided
Lesson 8 Collage Techniques
For this lesson we will be using the collage techniques that we learned last week to create either a landscape, or a still life work, or both.
